The origins of Valeview Shankill Schoolboys F.C. can traced back to 1966. Bertie Messitt, an Olympian and holder of sixteen Irish athletic records from all distances from two miles up to and including the marathon, was the founder of Shankill Youth Club. When Bertie retired from competition in 1966, he came upon a group of young lads who were travelling to St Josephs in Sallynoggin to play football. On questioning the lads as to why they would not play for a team in Shankill, Bertie was shocked to discover that the only soccer club in Shankill ,Valeview F.C., catered for senior players only and these young boys had to travel some six miles to Sallynoggin to play football.
At that time Shankill was a backwater, hidden from the main road with a close knit community of about 700 souls. Bertie, thinking of the kids in Shankill, initially was going to form an athletic club, but the more he thought about it the idea grew that what was needed was a club where everybody would have an opportunity to participate in various sports. The notion became a reality when Shankill Youth Club was formed. From nothing Shankill had a youth club with a booming Athletics, Basketball, and Table Tennis teams within a few short years. A Soccer Section was added and had grown tremendously. The teams playing under the name of Shankill Youth Club and had very successful soccer teams, one player received an International Cap for Ireland at under 15 level.
As the years rolled on a new club was born in the village Rathmicheal Shankill Football Club known locally as RSFC. This club was made up of former players from Shankill Youth Club who's preference was not to sign up with Valeview as senior players. This new club enjoyed very successful years and quickly established themselves a a major force in football and maintained fierce rivalry with Valeview F.C. With the rapid growth of Shankill village and the demise of Shankill Youth Club the need for schoolboy football grew. This brought about a merger of Valeview F.C. and Shankill Youth Club to form a new club Valeview Shankill Schoolboy F.C.

New name for Club 2010
Valeview Shankill Schoolboys Football Club decided at its last Annual General Meeting on 1st March 2010 to change its official name to Shankill Football Club. The possibility of changing the name of the club had been discussed by the committee over the past year and for a number of reasons it was decided to propose the name change at the AGM.
These reasons included -
Many clubs over the years had taken the word "school" out of their official title, as it gave the impression that the club is associated with a school.
The club has for many years catered for girls, and this season the number of girls in the club has grown substantially. It was not appropriate therefore to have the club referred to as a "boys" football club.
As there was already a seperate adult team in Shankill with the name of Valeview Shankill FC, this name was not an option for the club.
