Under 8C1 Start off 2012 review. Due to their impressive start to their first season of league football the Under 8 D1 team achieved promotion to the C1 league for the second half of the season. Through their training during january and taking part in a blitz in UCD in which they had the opportunity to receive some coaching from the UCD first team players and play in 6 mini games against tough local teams, they have continued the develop on their own skills and abilities, but more importantly develop from a group of talented individuals into a great TEAM.

Esker Celtic v Shankill U8C1.  1/4/12

The lads were up against a big and talented Esker Celtic side on Sunday, but as with every other game this season it didn't phase them.

The first half was tough and the lads battled to play ball around a group of big, strong Esker players, but battle they did with great performances from Gavin and Brandan in midfield and Tadgh pulling off a couple of great saves in net. They were rewarded with a one goal lead at half time with a long range shot into the bottom corner from Brandan.

Second half we changed it around a bit which brought great defensive performances from Tadgh,Liam,Eoghan and Alex in net.

They lads continued to counter attack after our defense broke down the esker attacks and got a second from Cian. We were unlucky not to get a couple more especially Harry who after he showed great skill with a high ball take down only for his shot to be saved.

Again another great performance from the lads even with a lot of them playing in positions they hadn't played before, but it just proved how talented this group is that they adapted and produced a win.

Well done Cian,Tadgh,Brandan,Eoghan,Harry,Liam,Calum,Gavin and Alex. Owen.

Shamrock Rovers v Shankill U8C1.   25/3/12

It was a very warm Sunday morning away at Rovers when the lads took on the only team to have beaten them this year.

Shankill started very well with plenty of attacking football only to be caught on the break to go one down. This didn't phase them and they continued to play their own game and were rewarded with an equaliser from Cian before half time.

Second half I felt we were the better side only to concede another rovers goal. The lads dug deep on a really hot day and got their rewards with a equaliser from Callum and a winner from Cian.

Late on we could have got another only for Brandan's great free kick to drift the wrong side of the upright.

Yet again another great performance and result from Alec,Harry,Cian,Brandan,Tadgh,Ronan,Gavin,Tristan,Calum and kayle finishing the game 2-3 to Shankill. Owen

Shankill U8C1 v St Joseph's   18-03-12
under8c1joeys

The lads played their best solid all round game on Sunday. They again started strongly and never gave joeys a chance to settle, callum slotted one in early on from a pass from Gavin after he made a strong one down the right hand side.

The second came from a strong run down the right from Cian beating five players then cutting into the box to shoot, the shot was saved by the keeper but Callum was in the box waiting for any loose ball ( like all good strikers)and slotted in the rebound from the keeper.

Joey's had a chance to get one back from a free kick at the edge of the box only for Eoghan to pull off a great save from bottom corner of the net.

Our third came from another strong run from Gavin from our half, who when inside their box shot  past their keeper making it 3 nil at half time.

In the second half we numerous chance's but could not convert. We then got a free kick outside their box with about 6 mins to go, Cian placed the ball and then dispatched it into their top corner which prompted Cian's celebration which you had to be there to see!

It was a credit to the lads that joey's didn't get much of a look in at our end the whole match with great defensive play from kayle, Cian and Harry in the first half and Tadgh, Gavin and Alex in the second.

So another great result and performance from Alex, kayle, Callum, Eoghan, Tadgh, Brandan, Harry, Cian, Gavin and Marcus, they did the club proud.

Ballyouster FC v Shankill U8C1.     11-03-12

It was an early morning start for the trip to Ballyouster, it was worth the trip with the lovely little pitch that awaited the lads. The lads started strongly straight away which lead to goals from Brandan,Tadgh,Callum and Cian meant we went in at half time 6-1 up.

The pick of the bunch was with some lovely play from Ronan on the left hand line in his own half he skilfully beat two players played the ball down the line to Gavin who played it in to box for Callum to slot it home, a really good team goal.

The second half we changed things around the lads took it a little easier, Ballyouster scored three in the second half with us replying with one from Cian, it was a comfortable enough win in the end.

Great performances as usual from Brandan, Alex, Alec, Tadgh, Gavin, Harry, Cian, Ronan,Liam and Callum resulting in a 4-7 victory.

Shankill U8C1 v Shamrock Rovers.  4/3/12
under8c1rovers
This game played at home on Sunday morning was always going to be a big ask for the lads to be able to compete with a big, strong and talented Shamrock Rovers side.

We didn't start well and with the wind and hill behind them Rovers scored 3 early goals.

The lads started to slowly get into the game but conceded a fourth towards the end of the second half.

The second half with the hill and what wind was left behind us, we started to create some chances.

Goals from Cian and Calum gave us some hope, but as we were pushing on to attack rovers scored two.

It was a match Rovers deserved to win, but we could have got a few more goals to push them right to the end only for some excellent goalkeeping from the Rovers goalie who pulled off three fantastic save's. We also hit the crossbar and the post.

We done to Kyle,Ronan,Gavan,Seamus,Darragh,Brandon, Tadgh, Callum, Cian and Eoghan a great second half performance from the lads showed they are well able to compete at this high level.

Finished Shankill 2 Rovers 6

Shankill U8C1 mascots for UCD v Cork premier league match 2/3/12
Under8c1-ucd02-03-12-1

The lads attended the UCD bowl on the 2nd of march along with the U8A1 team to be the mascots to lead the UCD and Cork players on to the pitch for their first premier league match of the season.

At half time they played a match against the U8A1 team on the pitch in front of the stand. It was a  great experience as the lads were cheered on by the fans in the stand in a match that finished 1-1 with Cian scoring the goal for us.

I am hopeful this was the first of many times this group of talented young footballers will be seen playing in front of a big crowd.

26/02/12 Shankill U8C1 v Esker Celtic   3-2

A game against a big Esker Celtic side started of slow, the lads took there time to get into the game and found it hard against some big players. Two goals from Cian, the second of which was a nice run beating three esker players and finishing from just inside the edge of the box.

We went in to the half time two up.

In the second half Esker benefited from playing down the hill to bring the score back to 2-2. That's the way it looked like it was going to end until Brandon controlled a loose ball at the half way line with his chest, powered forward and buried the ball into the back of the Esker net with one his powerful right foot shots late on.

Finished 3-2 to the lads with another great performance from Marcus,Tristan, Ronan,Gavan,Liam,Brandon,Tadgh,Cian,Matthew and Adam.

19/2/12
Cambridge boys FC v Shankill FC

An away game played in ringsend park on a great small sided games astro pitch was one to remember. We were up against a strong Cambridge side and after the first ten minutes I thought we had met our match, then the lads started to shine, after weathering the storm with some great defensive play from a back three of Ronan, Gavin, Brandon and great goalkeeping from Alex they started to play ball. Cian made a run down the left wing, played in a lovely cross to edge of the six yard box for it to be met by a cheeky back heeled volley by Liam, what a goal!

Towards the end of the first half the opposition profitted from a unlucky bounce from our kick out and equalised.

The second half saw our midfield and forward players Tadgh, Brandon, Cian and Calum take control, only for some great goalkeeping from the Cambridge keeper we could have got one or two early on.

The last ten minutes saw Cambridge come back into game and they were awarded a penalty, but with max in net giving the taker the eyes he failed to covert his chance. We were then disallowed a goal which was the right decision from the ref.

It looked like it was heading for a draw but then with a couple of minutes to go Cian made a strong run towards their goal, had his shot saved but the keeper couldn't hold it, Cian had continued his run to slot the free ball in the back of the net. Finished 2-1 to Shankill and was a brilliant, entertaining game of football between two good teams.

The lads Alex,Brandon,Gavin,Ronan,Tadgh,Calum,Max,Liam and Cian made me and their parents very proud with their excellent display.

5/2/12
Shankill FC v Ballyoulster
They started their first game of the 2012 season with a home game against Ballyoulster FC, it must be said the away side were a weakened side and only had seven players to make the long trip from celbridge. We( I say we but I really mean me) were a little bit nervous of what to expect from opposition from the higher league, I need not to have worried as goals from Alec, Brandon and two from Cian made it a comfortable win for the team.
